Outside a television office in Parel. Roadies 7 hopefuls mill around sporting black-yellow stickers on their clothes. The neighbourhood chaat-wala does brisk business.

Auditions are on in a college for Sony's Dance Premier League. Girls rehearse feverishly at a staircase landingu2026 in the corridor, a contestant hugs her father tight. Just then a skinny kid jumps out of the auditorium,
hi-fiving everyone in sight. Another soon-to-be starlet.u00a0

Sure, the tags attached to a reality show are many: tears, arguments and the worst side to human nature. But you get your 15 minutes worth of fame. Worth auditioning at least onceu2026 and surely before you get to 30 and start thinking more sensibly.u00a0

"We go to several small towns these days, so more people can audition." Indian Idol 4 auditioned over a lakh singers from 16 cities unlike its first season in which only six cities featured.

Dance Premier League has screened 35,000 dancers nationally. The process is straightforward: "Contestants register at the venue and perform. We shortlist and finally pick the best," says Danish. The time frame depends on the number of people.

Another top official of a popular music channel insists that reality shows are no longer just talent based. Confidence is a key factor for selection.

Sufi Malhotra, a Roadies 6 contestant, is glad that the auditions have become a lot more accessible because the first round happens online.

Though he was always interested in the biker show, Sufi never tried his hand before because, "Bheed itni hoti thi ke mann nahin lagta tha." For an audition at 9 am, bikers would queue up at 6 am. This year, for the sixth season, an online registration, group discussion and interview later, Sufi was selected.u00a0

The seventh season of the reality show includes seven rounds of auditions which include tasks as well. The point the producers and channel want to get across is that performance is appreciated, not politics.

That and the 'X' quality that separates you from the crowd. Apparently, one of the contestants attached a couple of pages full of the profiles and passwords of other contestants whose accounts he had hacked into along with his registration form. A little extreme, yes.

Sufi's mantra is simpler: "No one knows you so show your personality and remember nobody can play you better than you."
